Panchayat Samiti is a rural local self-government body in India. It functions at the taluka (block) level. Panchayat Samiti acts as a link between the Gram Panchayat and the Zilla Parishad.
Composition of Panchayat Samiti ::
- Members: The Panchayat Samiti consists of elected members, members of the Legislative Assembly, and members of Parliament. Also, seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, women, and other backward classes.
- पदाधिकारी: The head of the Panchayat Samiti is the 'Chairman'. He is elected by the members. The Deputy Chairman is also elected from among the members.
- Block Development Officer (BDO): The Block Development Officer works as the secretary of the Panchayat Samiti. He controls the functioning of the Panchayat Samiti.
Functions of Panchayat Samiti ::
- To consolidate and evaluate the plans of the Gram Panchayat.
- Identifying problems at the block level and taking measures to resolve them.
- Implementing development works and plans.
- Providing facilities like education, health, roads, water supply.
- Supervising the work of Gram Panchayats.
